History

Selection Process

In 2017, USA Baseball will revamp the 15U National Team Trials, expanding the rolling invitation process to now include a minimum of 72 players. These 72 athletes will be identified for the 15U Trials through the USA Baseball National Team Championships; the USA Baseball National Team Identification Series (NTIS); the National Team Development Program (NTDP); additional secondary events; and recommendations from professional scouts and college and high school coaches. As players are named to the team, USA Baseball will publicize the announcement(s) through a press release and/or by posting to USABaseball.com.

The primary identification vehicle for the 2017 USA Baseball 15U National Team Trials will be the two 15U National Team Championships tournaments (East and West) to be held June 16-23 in Jupiter, Florida, and June 23-30 in the greater Phoenix area. To attend this event, players must be on a registered team admitted to the event. A minimum of 34 trials invitations will come from the 15U Championships based upon a player's performance during the week as evaluated by USA Baseball's on-site scouting task force.

Players may also qualify for the following calendar year's 15U National Team Trials by competing in the National Team Identification Series. The NTIS is held each August and provides USA Baseball with an advanced look at the upcoming class of top players at the 11U, 13U, 14U, 15U, 16U and 17U level.

At the NTIS, USA Baseball Task Force members will identify a minimum of twelve (12) players for the following season's 15U National Team Trials. Players participate in the NTIS through a regional qualification process. For 2017, national team trials invitations were made based on performances at the 2016 14U NTIS.

Two players were also selected from the 2016 14U National Team Development Program for inclusion in the 2017 15U National Team Trials.

New to 2017, 18 players from the 2017 14U NTDP will be selected to immediately participate in the 15U National Team Trials. These 18, along with the 34 from the National Team Championships, 12 from the 2016 14U NTIS, two from the 2016 14U NTDP and the six director's picks, will come together to make the 72-man 15U Trials roster.

Additional secondary events may be held throughout the year by USA Baseball that may also be used to identify players for current or future 15U National Team Trials. These events may include, but are not limited to, the National High School Invitational (NHSI), 14U/17U Championships and additional events held at the USA Baseball National Training Complex in Cary, North Carolina.

Once the 72 players have been identified and invited, they will convene at the National Training Complex in Cary for the 2017 USA Baseball 15U National Team Trials. For the first portion of 15U Trials, players will be split into four teams and participate in practices and intrasquad games. After the first three days, the 72-man Trials roster will be cut down to 34 players. Those 34 will remain to participate in additional games and workouts to compete for one of the final 20 roster spots on the 2017 USA Baseball 15U National Team. The 15U National Team will compete in the 2017 COPABE Pan Am "AA" Championships in Cartagena, Colombia, from Aug. 11-20.

Information contained in this selection process document is subject to change at the sole discretion of USA Baseball and without further notice.

Early opportunities to be identified in 2017 for the 2018 USA Baseball 15U National Team include the 2017 14U National Team Development Program and the 2017 NTIS. Four (4) players from the 2017 14U NTDP will be invited to the 2018 15U National Team Trials. Twelve (12) players from the 2017 14U NTIS will be invited to the 2018 15U National Team Trials, with the remainder being selected via the National Team Championships and additional secondary events.
