The primary identification vehicle for the USA Baseball 14U National Team Development Program will be the 14U National Team Championships. To attend these events, players must compete on one of the teams that will be admitted to participate at each site. At the 14U National Team Championships, USA Baseball Task Force members will identify a minimum of 26 players for the 2017 14U National Team Development Program. Additional secondary events may be held throughout the year by USA Baseball at its National Training Complex in Cary, N.C., which may also be used to identify players for current or future 14U National Team Development Programs.
Players may also qualify for the following calendar year's 14U NTDP by competing in the National Team Identification Series (NTIS). The NTIS is held each August and September and provides USA Baseball with an advanced look at the upcoming class of top players at the 12U, 14U, 15U, 17U and 18U competition levels. At the NTIS, USA Baseball Task Force members will identify a minimum of 12 players for the following season's 14U NTDP. Players may participate in the NTIS through a regional qualification process. For 2017, these invitations have already been made based on the 2016 13U American Elite Baseball Championship, formally known as the 13U NTIS.
Once at the 14U National Team Development Program, players will participate in skill development sessions, various off-field educational components including guest speakers/instructors and intrasquad Stars vs. Stripes games. First implemented in 2015, the 14U National Team Development Program will also train with and play against the 15U National Team, in the Junior Prospect Classic, as that program prepares for international competition. USA Baseball will engage members of the professional and collegiate community as well as USA Baseball alumni to serve as instructors and educators throughout the week.
The 14U National Team Development Program will be used to further connect identified athletes with USA Baseball staff to better prepare and develop the athletes for a future USA Baseball National Team experience. New to 2017, 18 players from the 2017 14U NTDP will be selected to immediately participate in the 15U National Team Trials. These 18, along with the 34 from the National Team Championships, 12 from the 2016 14U NTIS, two from the 2016 14U NTDP and six director's picks, will come together to make the 72-man 15U Trials roster. From the 18 selected players, two (2) players will be invited to the 2018 15U National Team Trials. Additionally, the 18 players selected from the 14U NTDP to participate in 15U Trials will be featured in Baseball America later that summer.
