The 2016 USA Baseball 12U National Team will continue to utilize a rolling invitation process for selecting players to the 12U National Team Trials by way of the NTIS in 2015 and two main identifiers in 2016. A minimum of 36 players will be identified for the 2016 12U National Team Trials through the USA Baseball National Open via the Open Development Camps as well as the USA Baseball Futures Invitational. The Futures Invitational will be the third identification vehicle used to select the 2016 12U National Team. Eligible players for the 2016 12U National Team must be born after Jan. 1, 2004. The 2016 11U National Team Identification Series will identify athletes with a 2005 date of birth for the 2017 12U National Team Trials.
The third year of the USA Baseball Open Development Program will consist of local development camps held from January through early June 2016. These events will emphasize player-development techniques and will use curriculum designed by current and former USA Baseball staff. To register for a 12U Open Development Camp, please click here.
Players will be recommended to USA Baseball by coaches hosting the 12U Open Development Camps, from which 100 total athletes will be invited to attend the USA Baseball National Open. The National Open will be held July 18-20, 2016, at MLB Urban Youth Academy in Compton, Calif. A minimum of 14 players will be invited from the National Open to participate in the 2016 12U National Team Trials directly following the National Open.
The USA Baseball 11U/12U Futures Invitational will be used as an additional identification opportunity. The Futures Invitational is a team-based championship tournament of 11U and 12U teams that will take place June 23-26, 2016, and will be held annually at the USA Baseball National Training Complex and adjoining Thomas Brooks Park in Cary, N.C. Teams may apply online at USABaseball.com to compete in the event.
From the Futures Invitational, USA Baseball will select a minimum of eight players to participate in the 12U National Team Trials, bringing the total number of Trials invitees to a minimum of 36 in 2016. The event will include five games, athletic-performance testing and interaction with USA Baseball's 18U National Team players and staff.
Players may also qualify for the following calendar year's 12U National Team Trials by competing in the National Team Identification Series. The NTIS gives USA Baseball an advanced look at the upcoming class of national-team players at the 11U, 13U, 14U, 16U, 17U and women's competition levels.
At the NTIS, USA Baseball taskforce members will identify a minimum of 12 players for the following season's 12U National Team Trials. Players can participate in the NTIS through a regional qualification process. For the 2016 12U National Team selection process, these invitations have already been made based on the 2015 NTIS.
After the 12U selection process has completed, players will report to the 12U National Team Trials, July 21-23, 2016, in Compton, Calif., at the MLB Urban Youth Academy. As with all USA Baseball national-team training and trials opportunities, the 12U National Team Trials is an all-expenses paid experience. At the 12U National Team Trials, players will participate in Red vs. Blue intrasquad scrimmages, workouts and other team-building activities.
At the conclusion of the Trials, USA Baseball taskforce members and the 12U National Team staff will select the final roster of 18 players for the 2016 12U National Team.
Information contained in this selection-process document is subject to change at the sole discretion of USA Baseball and without further notice.
